Unit 1 syllabus: Digital Logic

  1. Data and number systems; binary, octal and hexadecimal representation and their conversions; BCD, ASCII, EBCDIC, Gray codes and their conversions; signed binary number representation with 1's and 2's complement methods; binary arithmetic. Venn diagram, Boolean algebra; various logic gates, their truth tables and circuits; representation in SOP and POS forms; minimization of logic expressions by algebraic method and K-map method.
  2. Combinational circuits: adder and subtractor circuits; applications and circuits of encoder, decoder, comparator, multiplexer, de-multiplexer and parity generator. Memory systems: RAM, ROM, EPROM, EEROM; design of combinational circuits using ROM; programmable logic devices and gate arrays (PLAs and PLDs).
  3. Sequential circuits: basic memory element; S-R, J-K, D and T flip flops; various types of registers and counters and their design; irregular counter; state table and state transition diagram; sequential circuit design methodology.
  4. Different types of A/D and D/A conversion techniques. Logic families TTL, ECL, MOS and CMOS, their operation and specifications.

Sample Digital Logic previous year questions with answers

Q1PYQ · 2023-S2 Q11 · 2025-B Q33

The hexadecimal number F4 is equivalent to which binary number?

  1. (A) 11111001
  2. (B) 11110100
  3. (C) 11111100
  4. (D) 11111010

Answer: (B) 11110100. F = 1111, 4 = 0100.

Q2PYQ · 2023-S1 Q10 · 2025-C Q47

Which technique is commonly used to convert a Gray code to its binary equivalent?

  1. (A) Subtraction method
  2. (B) Addition method
  3. (C) Exclusive OR (XOR) operation
  4. (D) Division method

Answer: (C) Exclusive OR (XOR) operation. Each binary bit = previous binary bit XOR current Gray bit.

Q3PYQ · 2023-S1 Q7 (same idea in 2024, 2025-B Q94)

When two numbers are added using the 1's complement method and there is a carry-out from the MSB, what should be done?

  1. (A) Discard the carry
  2. (B) Add the carry to the least significant bit (LSB)
  3. (C) Add the carry to the MSB
  4. (D) Subtract the carry from the MSB

Answer: (B) Add the carry to the least significant bit (LSB). End-around carry: in 1's complement the carry is added back to the LSB.
