Unit 8 syllabus: Software Engineering

  1. Introduction to software engineering: characteristics, emergence of software engineering, software metrics and models, process and product metrics. Software life cycle models: waterfall, prototype and spiral models and their comparison.
  2. Software project management: size estimation (LOC and FP metrics), cost estimation (Delphi and basic COCOMO), introduction to Halstead's software science, staffing level estimation (Putnam's model). Software requirements specification: SRS documents, their characteristics and organization.
  3. Software design: classification, software design approaches, function oriented software design, structured analysis (data flow diagrams) and structured design, introduction to object oriented design.
  4. Coding and testing of software: unit testing, black box testing, white box testing, debugging, program analysis tools, system testing. Software reliability and quality assurance: reliability metric, Musa's basic model.
  5. Software quality assurance: ISO 9000 and SEI CMM and their comparison. Software maintenance: maintenance process models and reverse engineering, estimation of maintenance costs.

Sample Software Engineering previous year questions with answers

Q1PYQ · 2023-S1 Q48 · 2025-D Q68

Which software life cycle model allows for iterative development and incorporates risk analysis?

  1. (A) Waterfall model
  2. (B) Prototype model
  3. (C) Spiral model
  4. (D) Agile model

Answer: (C) Spiral model. Every loop of the spiral has a risk-analysis quadrant.

Q2PYQ · 2023-S2 Q48 · 2025-C Q63

Which software life cycle model is based on iterative prototyping?

  1. (A) Waterfall model
  2. (B) Spiral model
  3. (C) Agile model
  4. (D) Prototype model

Answer: (B) Spiral model. Official 23-S2 key: Spiral — it builds a prototype in each iteration. (If Spiral were absent, Prototype would be the answer.)

Q3PYQ · 2023-S1 Q53

Which metric is used for estimating the size of a software project?

  1. (A) Cyclomatic Complexity
  2. (B) Function Points (FP)
  3. (C) Defect Density
  4. (D) Software Reliability Index

Answer: (B) Function Points (FP). FP (and LOC) are size metrics; cyclomatic complexity measures control-flow complexity.
